Removing Pesticide Residues From Produce

1. Baking Soda Soak (Most effective all-around for surface pesticides)

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) degrades common pesticides via hydrolysis.

Ratio: 1 teaspoon baking soda per 2 cups (500 ml) of cold water.

Process: Submerge firm produce (apples, pears, tomatoes, grapes, peppers) in the solution.

Let soak for 12–15 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly under cold running water for at least 15–30 seconds.

Note: For berries or thin-skinned fruits, cap soak times to 30–60 seconds to avoid driving chemicals into the soft tissue.

2. Vinegar Soak (Best for wax removal & antimicrobial protection)Vinegar helps dissolve waxy coatings applied to fruits while lowering microbial counts.

Ratio: 1 part white distilled vinegar to 3 parts water.

Process: Soak produce for 5–10 minutes, then scrub firm surfaces with a brush and rinse thoroughly with cold running water to eliminate any residual vinegar taste.

3. Saltwater Soak (Simple alternative)

Ratio: 2 tablespoons of table salt per 4 cups (1 liter) of water.

Process: Soak for 10–15 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
